COMPASS/ASSET- Assessment for Placement

Mohave Community College wants students to be successful in their courses. The assessment screening is a tool to diagnose students'  readiness for, and probability of success in college courses, especially those courses that require minimum skill levels in reading, English composition or mathematics. Mathematics assessment scores will be valid for two years from the date of the most recent assessment. Assessment screening and a follow-up session with an advisor are designed to provide students with complete information about their academic standing and the various MCC programs available. Mathematics assessment scores will be valid for two years from the date of the most recent assessment.

COMPASS is a computer adaptive test designed to assess a student's math, English and reading skills. The test is used to determine what a student remembers and maybe has forgotten, about a subject. COMPASS is not a pass/ fail test, but an assessment to determine the best class for a student.

Precollege Studies Assessments

Adult Basic Education (ABE) Test of English Language Acquisition for Adults (BEST) - The BEST is the state mandated test for speakers of other languages and is a requirement for those who are taking an ABE grant-funded course. These courses lead to improved skills in listening, speaking, reading and language arts. Students take a pre-test during orientation and are assigned an appropriate course level. Students are required to complete a post-test at each level to determine their educational gains. If students are returning after an absence of more than two semesters, they  must again take the orientation and BEST test so that they might be enrolled in the appropriate courses.

Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) - The TABE is the Test of Adult Basic Education and is a requirement for those taking an ABE grant-funded course (including GED classes) that leads to improved skills in reading, language arts and math. Students take the state mandated pre-test during the orientation course and take the post-test at the end of the course to which the orientation course assigns them. If  students are returning after an absence of two semesters, they must again take the orientation and the BEST so that they might be enrolled in the appropriate courses. For further information on any aspect of obtaining a GED, contact Precollege Studies at the following locations:

  • Thomas C. Henry Campus - Bullhead City, 928.704.7786

Ability to Benefit Testing (ATB)

Students who did not earn a “standard” high school diploma or GED are required to pass an approved "Ability to Benefit" test to qualify for Federal Financial Aid Programs under the U.S. Department of Education's "Ability to Benefit" guidelines. MCC uses the COMPASS for this purpose.  Additional information is available from the campus student services or financial aid office.

Proctored Exams for Other Schools

The MCC testing staff, as a service to currently enrolled students and the public, supervises examinations for other institutions under the following conditions:

  1. Arrangements for such testing must be made at least two weeks in advance of MCC’s receipt of the examination.
  2. Payment of appropriate fees (if required) must be made prior to the exam.  The fee covers handling of the examination consistent with sound testing procedures and the instructions from the home institution; completion of all forms; mailing the examination; and proctoring.
  3. Although every effort will be made to accommodate all requests, the actual scheduling of the examination will be made by the Testing Center based on the availability of personnel and other relevant factors.

CLEP-College Level Examination Program

Do you want to receive college credit without college course work? If you are already proficient in a subject, you can prove competency through the College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) sponsored by the College Board. Whether you have mastered this material through prior course work, independent study or cultural pursuits, you may want to consider CLEP examinations. The College Board website allows you to view test descriptions that include specific information on the knowledge and skills required and also study resources.

CLEP offers two types of tests: general examinations and subject examinations. Not all universities accept CLEP credits.

  • General Examinations measure students' college-level achievement in four basic areas of the liberal arts: humanities, mathematics, natural and social sciences and history. Mohave Community College can grant a maximum of six credits for each general examination successfully completed.
  • Subject Examinations measure students' achievement in specific college courses, and Mohave Community College grants credit for those specific courses based on the students' achievement levels. These subject examinations stress concepts, principles, relationships and applications of course materials. The amount of credit awarded for each subject examination successfully completed varies from three to six credits.

Credit by CLEP may be earned by students meeting the following requirements:

  • Student is currently registered for at least three semester hours.
  • Student is in good academic standing.
  • Student has paid all applicable testing fees in advance.

Individuals not enrolled at MCC may ask to take the CLEP examination(s) and will be required to pay an administrative fee to MCC, in addition to all other applicable test fees. Students earning a score in the 50th percentile or higher receive credit. If a student has taken a CLEP Subject Examination and scored in the 50th percentile or higher, the earned credit is applied to the appropriate course as determined by the Office of the Registrar. If you have questions about which tests may be taken and how credits are applied, please contact the test center at your local campus.

Pre- & Post-tests for selected MCC courses & programs

NET-Nursing Entrance Test - The NET evaluates students in seven areas that are essential for academic success including basic math skills, science, writing, reading comprehension, and learning styles. National norms are evaluated each year to provide the most current statistics by degree programs for group and individual results.

Mohave Community College utilizes the NET as a pre-admission testing and counseling tool for its RN and LPN nursing programs. Students looking for admission to the Nursing program must contact directly an advisor at their local campus for information about test scores, program requirements and course prerequisites. The NET study guide is available for purchase at MCC bookstores. Study guides may be obtained at www.eriworld.com

ESCO-HVAC - HVAC Excellence is the national standard for technical competency in the Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration industry.   HVAC Excellence is a series of closed-book exams, each building upon its prerequisite.  EPA Certification exams are also offered over the Internet. Certification results are provided instantly at the time of testing.  Certification documents are mailed from ESCO the next business day, the fastest and easiest way to provide certification.

WorkKeys® Assessments

WorkKeys Assessments give students and workers reliable information about their workplace skill levels combined with information about skill levels required for jobs.  Assessment information can enable users to make good career and educational decisions.

Each workplace skill assessed is described by a distinct skill scale. The scales were developed with the help of educators and business people. The scales encompass a range of skills, from the lowest tested entry-level position to positions for which specialized training is needed. WorkKeys assessments are administered via computer-based testing.  See WorkKeys website here. --> WorkKeys
